Description

RAF Akrotiri is a Royal Air Force military airbase located in the Western Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, a British Overseas Territory on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Constructed in 1955, the base has been continuously operational since its establishment. It serves as a permanent joint operating base, owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Royal Air Force, with control exercised by British Forces Cyprus. The station also accommodates civilian charter flights.

Historically, RAF Akrotiri played a role in the Suez Crisis in 1956, the EOKA revolt, and monitoring the Egypt/Israel Suez Canal fighting. It served as a reception point for American casualties after the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing and was used during retaliatory attacks against Libya in 1986. More recently, it functioned as a transit point for personnel evacuations during the 2006 Lebanon War and a staging base for support aircraft in Operation Ellamy during the 2011 military intervention in Libya. Since 2014, it has been a crucial base for operations against Islamic State (ISIS) under Operation Shader, deploying Panavia Tornado and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. In 2018, it supported missile strikes against Syria, and in 2024, Typhoons from Akrotiri struck Houthi targets in Yemen. The base also hosted the main hospital for British Forces Cyprus, The Princess Mary's Hospital, until its closure in 2012.

Key units stationed at RAF Akrotiri include No. 84 Squadron RAF, No. 903 Expeditionary Air Wing, and the Cyprus Operations Support Unit. The United States Air Force also maintains a presence with Detachment 1 of the 9th Reconnaissance Wing, operating Lockheed U-2S reconnaissance aircraft for surveillance missions. The airfield features one runway, designated 10/28, measuring 2,745 by 45 meters with a grooved blacktop asphalt concrete surface. The station's motto is 'Acra semper acria' (The Peninsula is Always Eager).
