Description

Stewart Air National Guard Base is located near Newburgh, New York, in Orange County. It operates as a dual-use facility, sharing its airfield with New York Stewart International Airport. The base was initially established in 1934 under the direction of Douglas MacArthur, serving as a training facility for the United States Military Academy at West Point. It was significantly expanded during World War II. In 1948, the facility transitioned to the newly formed United States Air Force, becoming Stewart Air Force Base, while maintaining its training role with West Point. A SAGE direction center, DC-02, was added in 1958, controlling the Boston Air Defense Sector. Military operations at Stewart largely ceased in the 1960s, leading to its deactivation in 1970, after which New York State took control for civilian airport operations. The current military base reopened in 1980 through an agreement between the state and the Air National Guard. In 1981, it served as the arrival point for the freed American hostages from Iran.

The host unit at Stewart ANGB is the 105th Airlift Wing (105 AW) of the New York Air National Guard, an Air Mobility Command unit. The 105th Airlift Wing's mission involves providing peacetime and wartime inter-theater airlift operations, currently utilizing the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, having transitioned from C-5 Galaxy aircraft by September 2012. Other units stationed at the base include Marine Air Refueler and Transport Squadron Four Five Two (VMGR-452), Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49 (MALS-49), and Marine Aircraft Group 49 (MAG-49) Detachment Bravo, a Marine Corps Reserve unit operating KC-130T Hercules aircraft and transitioning to KC-130J Hercules. Stewart Army Subpost supports the U.S. Military Academy, the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, and the UH-72 Lakota-equipped 2nd Aviation Detachment. The Stewart-Newburgh Armed Forces Reserve Center also houses various United States Army Reserve and New York Army National Guard units. The base has supported disaster relief efforts, including responses to Hurricane Katrina, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Hurricane Sandy, and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
