Description

Stewart Air National Guard Base is located in Orange County, New York, approximately 60 miles north of New York City and 100 miles south of Albany. The facility was established in 1934 under the direction of Douglas MacArthur as a training site for the United States Military Academy at West Point. It is named in honor of Lachlan Stewart, a 19th-century sea captain whose family donated the land. The base underwent expansion during World War II and transitioned to the United States Air Force in 1948, becoming Stewart Air Force Base. In 1958, it added a SAGE direction center (DC-02) for the Boston Air Defense Sector. The installation was deactivated in 1970 and operated as a civilian airport until the current Air National Guard base opened in 1980. Key historical events at the site include the 1981 arrival of American hostages freed from Iran and the 2026 arrival of captured Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.

The base is operated by the New York Air National Guard, with the 105th Airlift Wing serving as the host unit. Its primary mission is the execution of inter-theater airlift operations. Stationed units include the 137th Airlift Squadron, the 213th Engineering Installation Squadron, and the 105th Maintenance Squadron. The base also hosts tenant organizations including Marine Air Refueler and Transport Squadron 452 (VMGR-452), Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49, and Marine Aircraft Group 49, Detachment Bravo. The Stewart Army Subpost supports the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment and the 2nd Aviation Detachment, while the Stewart-Newburgh Armed Forces Reserve Center consolidates various Army Reserve and National Guard units.

The installation encompasses 267 acres and 36 buildings, totaling approximately 757,000 square feet. It shares airfield infrastructure with New York Stewart International Airport. The 105th Airlift Wing operates Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. Marine Corps units utilize the KC-130 Hercules, while the 2nd Aviation Detachment operates UH-72 Lakota helicopters. There is no on-base military housing; personnel are billeted in contracted off-base facilities.
