Description

Tainan Air Base is located in the South District of Tainan, Taiwan. Proposed in 1935 and opened on June 26, 1937, the facility was established by the Tainan Prefecture government during Japanese rule. During World War II, the airport was converted into a base for the Tainan Air Group. Following the war, the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) assumed control of the facility while maintaining its status as a joint civil-military airport.

Between 1955 and 1979, the United States Air Force (USAF) utilized the base for various deployments. Units stationed at the facility included the 12th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 26th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, and 336th Fighter-Day Squadron. The 868th Tactical Missile Squadron operated MGM-1 Matador missiles at the base from 1958 to 1962. During the 1960s and 1970s, the USAF 405th Fighter Wing maintained detachments of F-100D Super Sabres and F-4 Phantoms. Nuclear weapons were stored at the installation until their withdrawal was ordered in 1972. In 1958, the US Army Corps of Engineers conducted infrastructure work at the site, including the construction of base buildings and concrete runways.

The ROCAF 1st Tactical Fighter Wing operates the base. It hosts the 1st, 3rd, and 9th Tactical Fighter Squadrons, which are equipped with AIDC F-CK-1 Ching-kuo fighters. Other resident units include the 1st Maintenance and Supply Group, 1st Base Service Group, Magong Air Base Service Squadron, and the 1st and 9th Military Police Squadrons.

The facility provides maintenance infrastructure and previously served as the headquarters for the Air Asia Corporation, which performed aircraft maintenance for the United States Armed Forces. The airfield is shared with the Tainan Airport commercial terminal. Due to the military nature of the facility, the civilian terminal is located at a distance from the main airfield, and operations are occasionally restricted by military activity.
