Description
Thanh Son Air Base, also identified as Phan Rang Air Base, is a military airfield operated by the Vietnam Air Defence - Air Force (VADAF). It is located north-northwest of Phan Rang – Tháp Chàm in Khánh Hòa province. The facility was established by the Imperial Japanese Army in approximately 1942. Following the First Indochina War, during which it was used by the French Air Force, the site was abandoned in 1954. Reconstruction began in 1965 to support operations by the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF). The People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) seized the airfield in April 1975.
The base is currently operated by the VADAF and serves as the garrison for the 937th Fighter Regiment. This unit operates Sukhoi Su-22 fighter-bombers. Historically, the base hosted multiple wings during the Vietnam War, including the USAF 35th and 366th Tactical Fighter Wings, the 315th Special Operations Wing, and the 14th Special Operations Wing. Aircraft types previously stationed at the base included F-100 Super Sabres, B-57 Canberras, F-4C Phantom IIs, C-123 Providers, A-37 Dragonflies, and various gunships such as the AC-47 and AC-119. The Royal Australian Air Force 2 Squadron also operated Canberra bombers from the facility. Following the 1975 transition, the Vietnam People's Air Force utilized captured A-37 fighters and UH-1H helicopters at the site.
Infrastructure at the facility includes concrete runways, taxiways, and a large aircraft parking ramp. Notable installations include concrete aircraft shelters, "Wonderarch" shelters, and hangars. Maintenance and operational facilities include an armament and electronics shop, fire station, and fuel storage areas supported by pipeline systems. While some original structures have been removed since 1975, the concrete aircraft shelters and revetments remain on the parking ramp.
