Wajir Airport

Wajir Airport is located in Wajir County, Kenya, approximately 495 kilometers northeast of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, near the Jubbada Hoose region of southern Somalia. The facility was built between 1977 and 1978 by Israeli construction company HZ as a military airbase for the Kenya Air Force. In September 2007, following the construction of a passenger terminal, the Kenyan government commissioned the site for combined military and civilian operations. In 2012, US Navy Seabees constructed a runway designed to accommodate heavy aircraft.

The facility houses two military installations within its boundaries: a Kenya Army camp located west of the terminal building and a Kenya Air Force compound situated 0.5 kilometers south of the perimeter fence. The site is owned by the Kenya Airports Authority and staffed by police officers alongside customs, immigration, and civil aviation personnel.

Operations at the airbase encompass military flights, charter services, commercial passenger routes, and cargo operations. The airport serves as a mandatory customs, immigration, and security screening stop for flights traveling between Kenya and Somalia. Commercial air services at the facility have included operations by carriers such as Fly-SAX, Jambojet, and Echo.
