Description
Yên Bái Air Base is a Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF) military airfield located north-northwest of Yên Bái. Constructed in the 1960s, the base entered service in 1967. In February 1969, the 925th Fighter Regiment was formed at the installation, operating MiG-17F and Shenyang J-6 aircraft.
During the Vietnam War, the facility was a target for U.S. air strikes. On 15 November 1967, F-105s from the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron bombed the base as part of a Commando Club mission. On 1 June 1972, a J-6 from the 925th Fighter Regiment shot down a U.S. F-4D near the base. Further U.S. attacks on 27 and 30 September 1972 destroyed MiG-21 and MiG-17 aircraft on the ground. During Operation Linebacker II in late 1972, U.S. Air Force F-111 strike bombers attacked the airfield, rendering it temporarily inoperable.
The base is currently operated by the VPAF and hosts the 921st Fighter Squadron. This unit operates Su-22M4 and Su-22UM3K aircraft.
