Description

Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) is a military facility located near Warren, Ohio, in the United States, operating as part of the Youngstown–Warren Regional Airport. The station was built and opened in 1951, initially as Youngstown Air Force Base, dedicated on August 11, 1952. It was originally under the Air Defense Command (ADC), with the 88th Air Base Squadron and the 86th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, flying F-84C Thunderjets and later F-102 Delta Daggers. In 1955, the 30th Air Division, 79th Fighter Group (Air Defense) was assigned. The Air Force Reserve's 26th Fighter-Bomber Squadron was assigned in 1952, eventually transitioning to C-119 Flying Boxcars. Command of the base transferred to Continental Air Command (now Air Force Reserve Command) in 1960.

The current host unit is the 910th Airlift Wing (910 AW), an Air Force Reserve Command unit operationally gained by the Air Mobility Command. The 910 AW traces its lineage at Youngstown to 1963, operating C-119s, then A-37s and U-3s, before converting to an airlift mission with C-130 aircraft in 1981. The wing operates C-130H Hercules aircraft, with a portion of its mission dedicated to the Department of Defense's only fixed-wing aerial spray capability. As of 2022, these aircraft are slated for replacement by C-130J Hercules. The station also hosts a Navy Operational Support Center and a Marine Corps Reserve Center. Youngstown ARS features 59 operational buildings, primarily for aviation maintenance, training, and administration. Recent developments include federal funding for runway and taxiway resurfacing, and the construction of a new main gate complex to enhance force protection.
