Description

Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod designed and manufactures the CZ BREN 2. The rifle succeeded the CZ 805 BREN, which was developed beginning in 2006 to replace the Vz. 58 in the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic. Announced by the manufacturer in October 2015, the BREN 2 design incorporated direct feedback from soldiers operating in the field to adjust the layout and reduce the overall weight of the weapon system.

The CZ BREN 2 operates via a short-stroke gas piston system and a rotating bolt. Ergonomic features include a fully ambidextrous fire selector, magazine release, bolt release, and charging handle. The trigger group utilizes a simplified three-position switch for safe, semi-automatic, and fully automatic firing modes, discarding the two-round burst capability of its predecessor. The rifle features a redesigned cocking mechanism and a folding, adjustable buttstock. Non-combustible, impact-resistant materials are utilized throughout the construction to protect against mechanical damage. Routine disassembly and assembly do not require tools.

The Armed Forces of the Czech Republic began receiving the rifle in November 2016 and committed to standardizing it across all combat units. Other military and law enforcement operators include the French GIGN, Egyptian airborne and Republican Guard units, the Portuguese Air Force, and the Hungarian Defence Forces, the latter establishing domestic licensed production. Ukraine fielded the rifle in 2022 and subsequently secured a license to manufacture the platform domestically under the Sich brand. Variants include the BREN 2 PDW with a telescopic stock; the semi-automatic BREN 2 Ms for civilian use; the select-fire BREN 2 BR battle rifle; and the semi-automatic BREN 2 DMR, designated as the BREN 2 PPS in Czech service to replace the Dragunov SVD.
