SG 550

SIG Sauer AG, formerly Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft, developed the firearm in Switzerland. Co-developed with Italian manufacturer Beretta, the design was based on the earlier SG 540 model. In 1978, the Swiss armed forces established requirements for a modular successor to the Stgw 57 battle rifle, seeking a lighter weapon family that included a compact carbine for support troops, vehicle crews, and special forces. The selection process narrowed to the state-owned Waffenfabrik Bern C42 and the SIG SG 541. Following the rejection of an experimental cartridge in favor of the standard Swiss service cartridge, the SG 541 design was selected. The designation changed to SG 550, and production began in 1986. The Swiss military officially accepted the rifle into service in 1990 under the designation Stgw 90.

The firearm utilizes a gas-actuated, piston-driven long-stroke operating system that drives a rotary bolt with two locking lugs. Propellant gases pass through a port in the barrel to push the piston and bolt carrier rearward, with excess gas venting through an exhaust port. The gas system features a manually adjustable valve with settings for normal and adverse conditions. The stamped and welded steel receiver housing is finished with a ceramic-reinforced enamel. High-strength polymer is used for the handguards, pistol grip, and right-folding skeletonized buttstock. The weapon features a folding aluminum bipod, an ambidextrous safety and fire selector switch with four settings, and a pivoting trigger guard designed for use with winter gloves. Sights consist of a rotating rear diopter drum and a hooded front post, both equipped with tritium inserts for low-light use. Feed options include translucent polymer magazines that can be locked together.

The Swiss Armed Forces adopted the rifle as their standard service weapon, and it has seen use in conflicts including the War in Afghanistan and the Sinai insurgency. State forces, police units, and special operations groups globally have deployed the platform, including the Pontifical Swiss Guard, French GIGN, German GSG 9, and United States federal agencies. Multiple variants exist, including the SG 551 carbine, the compact SG 552 Commando, and the improved SG 553, which relocates the recoil spring to the piston rod. Dedicated marksman versions include the police-oriented SG 550-1 Sniper and the SG 751 SAPR battle rifle. Semi-automatic models, such as the PE 90 and the American-assembled SIG 556 series, which features an aluminum lower receiver, are produced for the civilian market.
