Description

The AD-08 Majid surface-to-air missile system made its initial public appearance during a parade on April 18, 2021, and was deployed in the 'Defenders of the Sky of Velayat 1400' military exercises later that year. The system derives its name from Majid Ghorbankhani.

Designed as an all-weather, short-range, low-altitude air defense system, the AD-08 Majid can simultaneously target and launch missiles against four separate threats, including drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and low-maneuvering aerial targets. The core system architecture comprises an electro-optical target identification and tracking system, a fire control command system, and a launcher featuring four missile compartments. Target identification and tracking rely entirely on the electro-optical system. The system can also be configured on an Aras 2 vehicle, equipped with two missiles and an airborne radiation detection system. The AD-08 missile utilizes passive guidance via an imaging infrared seeker paired with proximity fuses.

Iranian state outlet Tehran Times reported that the system engaged Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles over Iranian airspace during the 2025 Twelve-Day War and downed 17 of them; the claim has not been independently confirmed. Armenia became the first confirmed foreign operator of the system, publicly displaying the AD-08 Majid during Republic Day celebrations in Yerevan on May 28, 2026.
