Description
Commissioned into the Ukrainian Navy on 2 July 2023 at a ceremony in Glasgow, alongside sister ship Cherkasy. Formerly HMS Grimsby (M108), the Sandown-class minehunter was donated by the United Kingdom. Renamed Chernihiv after a Soviet-era minesweeper seized by Russia in 2014. Like Cherkasy, the vessel cannot transit to the Black Sea while the Montreux Convention restricts warship passage during the conflict. Both ships are temporarily based at Portsmouth for crew training and mine countermeasures exercises.
