New Zealand Navy HMNZS Manawanui Sunk

The dive and hydrographic support vessel HMNZS Manawanui ran aground on a reef off Upolu, Samoa, on the evening of 5 October 2024 while surveying it, and after a fire and capsizing she sank on the morning of 6 October, the New Zealand Defence Force said. All 75 people aboard were evacuated, USNI News reported. A Court of Inquiry found the direct cause was a series of human errors, with contributing factors including gaps in the training of key personnel, insufficient identification of the survey task's risks and lacking procedures, the NZDF said on releasing the final report. Manawanui, the former offshore vessel Edda Fonn, was commissioned in 2019.
