India Navy INS Nilgiri Commissioned

INS Nilgiri, lead ship of the Project 17A stealth frigate programme, was commissioned at Naval Dockyard Mumbai on 15 January 2025 in the same ceremony as the destroyer Surat and the submarine Vaghsheer. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, the 6,670-tonne design is an evolution of the Shivalik class with a reduced radar cross-section, an integrated mast and greater automation. Armament includes BrahMos anti-ship missiles, Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles and a 76 mm gun. Seven Project 17A frigates were ordered, split between Mazagon Dock and Garden Reach Shipbuilders.
