Description
The Type 23 frigate HMS Northumberland (F238) was retired from the Royal Navy in March 2025, after the Defence Secretary announced to Parliament on 20 November 2024 that structural damage discovered during her refit made her uneconomical to repair, the result of service well beyond the class's original out-of-service date, the UK Defence Journal reported. Her refit was halted immediately and the early retirement was estimated to save about £100 million. Based at Devonport, Northumberland was towed out of Portsmouth in September 2026 for scrapping abroad, Forces News reported. Type 26 frigates are to replace the class from 2027.
