Description
The decommissioned corvette ex-BRP Miguel Malvar sank on the morning of 5 May 2025 about 35 miles west of Zambales, Luzon, while being towed to its station as the target for the maritime strike phase of the U.S.–Philippine Exercise Balikatan 2025, CNN reported citing the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The Philippine Navy said rough seas and the ship's age caused it to take on a significant amount of water before any weapons were fired. Built as the U.S. Navy's USS Brattleboro during the Second World War, the 184-foot vessel had been selected because it exceeded its service life; its loss removed no hull from the active fleet.
