Serbian River Flotilla

Serbia has had no maritime coastline since Montenegro's independence in 2006, and its naval component consists solely of the River Flotilla (Rečna flotila), a brigade-level unit subordinated to the Serbian Army with headquarters in Novi Sad. There are no submarines, frigates, corvettes or seagoing amphibious vessels; the inventory is entirely brown-water. The flotilla dates its lineage to 19 August 1915 and the commissioning of the armed river steamer Jadar on the Sava, a date observed as Riverine Units Day, and assumed its present composition on 2 October 2008 when pontoon engineer units were incorporated.

The organization comprises a command and command company at Novi Sad, the 1st River Detachment at Novi Sad with the 93rd Diving Company, the 2nd River Detachment at Belgrade, the 1st Pontoon Battalion at Šabac, the 2nd Pontoon Battalion at Novi Sad, and a logistics company. The unit is commanded by an officer of captain (navy) rank.

The core of the fleet is the Neštin class of river minesweepers, built at Brodotehnika in Belgrade between 1976 and 1980 with a final hull, Novi Sad, completed in 1999. Serbian units include Titel, Apatin, Smederevo and Novi Sad, now employed as multipurpose waterway control vessels rather than in a dedicated mine countermeasures role. Armament comprises 20 mm M71 and M75 guns, with Strela 2M shoulder-launched missiles carried. Also in service are Type 20 patrol boats with twin 20 mm mounts, Type 22 landing craft capable of lifting a platoon or several tonnes of cargo, the command ship Kozara, a 1939-built hull acquired by Yugoslavia in 1960 and re-engined with diesel-electric propulsion, and RIB-720 rigid-hulled inflatables received through a Chinese donation. Pontoon units field PMP bridging sets and PTS-M tracked amphibians.

The area of responsibility covers roughly 1,626 km of navigable rivers and canals, principally the Danube, Sava, Tisa and Begej together with the Danube–Tisa–Danube canal network. Assigned tasks are control of inland waterways, securing river crossings for army manoeuvre, search and rescue, and diving, salvage and explosive ordnance work through the 93rd Diving Company, including unexploded ordnance associated with the German Danube wrecks near Prahovo, whose removal programme runs to 2027. Support to civil authorities is a recurring commitment: pontoon elements moved from Šabac to Svilajnac in 2026 to install a road bridge across the Velika Morava alongside the closed permanent crossing, repeating a deployment first made the previous year, and a seasonal pontoon bridge links Zemun with Veliko Ratno Ostrvo on the Danube.

No new construction programme is under way. Modernization proceeds through general overhauls at the Dunav shipyard in Bezdan, where Titel was the first hull taken in hand, while tactical-technical requirements have been drafted for a new shallow-draft armed river craft matched to Serbian inland waterway conditions.
