Description
The Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin-class, designated KDX-II, is a class of multipurpose destroyers operated by the Republic of Korea Navy. Developed as the second phase of the Korean Destroyer eXperimental program, the class succeeded the Gwanggaeto the Great-class. The program was established to facilitate the transition of the Republic of Korea Navy toward blue-water operations.
The hull incorporates stealth features and utilizes a combined diesel or gas propulsion system. For anti-air warfare, the class employs the SM-2 Block IIIA missile. On later vessels, starting with ROKS Wang Geon, the armament configuration was modified to include the indigenous K-VLS alongside the Mk 41 system to house Red Shark anti-submarine rockets and Hyunmoo III cruise missiles. Point defense is provided by RAM and Goalkeeper systems. The ships utilize the KDCOM-II combat management system, which is derived from the technology used in the Royal Navy Type 23 frigate. The electronics suite includes 2D long-range and 3D target indication radars, fire-control radars, and the SONATA electronic warfare system. In 2024, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration announced a Product Improvement Project to replace the combat information system, 3D radar, and sonar systems to address component obsolescence. This project is scheduled for completion in 2033.
The lead vessel was launched in 2002 and entered service in 2003. Vessels of this class have participated in international exercises, including RIMPAC and the International Fleet Review. Operational history includes deployments with the Cheonghae Unit for counter-piracy and security operations. In 2015, ROKS Wang Geon conducted non-combatant evacuation and diplomatic missions off the coast of Yemen. The KDX-II design also serves as the basis for a proposed arsenal ship and a variant designated KDX-IIA.
