Overview
The Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) is a modern, largely domestically built force whose first mission is deterrence of North Korea, and whose second is protecting the sea lanes on which one of the world's most trade-dependent economies depends. It contributes directly to the national three-axis deterrent through submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and has steadily added blue-water capability while retaining a dense force of coastal combatants for the Northern Limit Line and the approaches to both coasts.
The surface fleet is led by the Sejong the Great class (KDX-III), Aegis destroyers among the most heavily armed in the world, supported by Chungmugong Yi Sunshin (KDX-II) and Kwanggaeto the Great (KDX-I) destroyers. The frigate force has been renewed in successive batches through the FFX programme: Incheon, then Daegu with vertical launch cells and towed arrays, and now the Chungnam class, whose integrated mast and domestic combat management system serve as the testbed for the next generation of destroyers. Coastal defence rests on Yoon Youngha missile patrol boats and Chamsuri fast craft, while two Dokdo-class landing platform helicopter ships and the Cheonwangbong landing ships give the ROK Marine Corps a credible amphibious lift.
The submarine force is entirely domestic in design and increasingly strategic in role. Chang Bogo and Sohn Wonyil boats, built under German licence, are being supplemented by the Dosan Ahn Changho class (KSS-III), the first conventional submarines designed from the outset with vertical launch tubes for ballistic missiles, with a larger Batch-II now in production. This gives Seoul a survivable second-strike option without nuclear propulsion, and discussions on eventually acquiring nuclear-powered boats have gained political traction.
The centrepiece of future construction is the KDDX programme, six 6,000-tonne stealth destroyers with a fully indigenous combat system, sensors and vertical launchers. After years of legal and industrial disputes, Hanwha Ocean was selected as preferred bidder in June 2026 for a programme valued at around 7.8 trillion won, with the lead ship targeted for delivery by the end of 2032. Six Chungnam-class frigates are to be delivered by 2028, and the navy is investing heavily in uncrewed surface and underwater systems and in networked manned-unmanned teaming.
Korean yards have turned this domestic pipeline into an export industry, delivering submarines, frigates and support ships to Indonesia, the Philippines, Poland and Peru, and expanding into maintenance and repair work for the United States Navy. Operationally, the ROKN sustains the Cheonghae anti-piracy unit in the Gulf of Aden, contributes to multinational exercises across the Indo-Pacific, and maintains continuous readiness along a maritime boundary with North Korea that has produced repeated naval clashes.
