Description
The Orkan class, designated as Project 660 and recognized by NATO under the Sassnitz classification, originated from a naval project developed by the German Democratic Republic. Following the unification of Germany, the unfinished hulls were acquired by the Polish Navy to be completed for active service. The naming convention of the vessels—Orkan, Piorun, and Grom—references Polish destroyers from the Second World War. The lead ship’s name was originally intended for a domestic destroyer project that was terminated by the onset of the same conflict.
Classified as fast attack craft, these vessels are platforms for naval engagements and surface warfare. The primary offensive capability is centered on anti-ship missiles, though the quantity carried is frequently reduced during operations. This armament is supported by a medium-caliber naval gun and a close-in weapon system for point defense. The ships utilize 3-D surveillance radar and electro-optical fire control systems for target acquisition and engagement. Additional defensive equipment includes a rail launcher for short-range surface-to-air missiles and heavy machine gun posts.
The class has been in active service with the Polish Navy since 1992, with three units currently operational. Throughout their deployment, the vessels have undergone armament transitions, moving from interim missile systems to more modern anti-ship missile variants. Mid-life refits have been conducted on the units to maintain their operational status within the fleet's force structure.
