Description
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force retired its U-36A aircraft after 37 years of service. Derived from the Learjet 36, the U-36A was operated by Fleet Air Training Development Squadron 91 from Iwakuni as a training support aircraft, simulating anti-ship missile attacks and towing targets for the surface fleet and for maritime patrol crews. Its withdrawal ends a niche but heavily used capability, with the training support role passing to contracted civilian operators and to newer systems.
