Description
A U.S. Army AH-64 Apache went down near the Strait of Hormuz on June 9, 2026, while patrolling to enforce the U.S. blockade of Iran and protect commercial shipping. Pentagon officials confirmed the aircraft was struck by an Iranian Shahed drone, though whether the act was deliberate or accidental remained under investigation; Iran did not claim responsibility. Both crew members survived uninjured and were recovered within approximately two hours by a U.S. Navy Corsair unmanned surface vessel from Task Force 59 β marking the first known combat rescue by an uncrewed surface drone. President Trump cited the shootdown as grounds for retaliatory U.S. strikes on Iran later that same day.
