Al Bateen Air Base (Al Bateen Executive Airport)

Al Bateen Air Base, now Al Bateen Executive Airport, is on Abu Dhabi island, 12 km south-east of the city centre of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is a joint civil and military facility operated by Abu Dhabi Airports Company, handling business aviation alongside UAE government aviation assets.

The airfield was built in the 1960s and opened in 1970 as Abu Dhabi International Airport, replacing the city's previous airport. In November 1976 the British contractor Wimpey Asphalt received a $5.5 million contract to resurface the runway. Wimpey shipped heavy equipment from Britain and Italy and finished the work within six months. In 1982 a new Abu Dhabi International Airport, now Zayed International Airport, opened on the mainland south-east of the city to handle growing air traffic. The original airport was renamed Al Bateen Airport, its terminal building was repurposed, and it continued to operate for military, government and business aviation. In 1983 it became a military airbase, designated Bateen Air Base.

Beginning on 17 August 1990, two United States Air Force units deployed to Al Bateen during the build-up to the Gulf War. The 314th Military Airlift Squadron arrived first from Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, with sixteen Lockheed C-130E Hercules transports. The 41st Electronic Combat Squadron followed from Davis–Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, starting 26 August 1990, and eventually operated six Lockheed EC-130H Compass Call electronic attack aircraft from the base.

The airfield remained under military control until 2008. It then became a civilian airport for executive jets and was renamed Al Bateen Executive Airport. It retains a public/military designation.

Government tenants include a UAE Naval Aviation helicopter squadron and the air wing of the Abu Dhabi Police Department. Rotana Jet flies private jet services from the airport. The airline moved all its scheduled commercial operations to Zayed International Airport Terminal 2 in October 2014.
