Description
Baranovichi Air Base is located south of the city of Baranovichi and is operated by the Air Force and Air Defence Forces of the Republic of Belarus. The installation previously served as a Soviet Air Force facility and is identified by the ICAO code UMMA.
The 61st Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Soviet Air Defence Forces' 2nd Air Defence Army was established at the base in 1950. In November 1951, the 45th Heavy Bomber Aviation Division and 203rd TBAP arrived at the site, which functioned as a strategic bomber base. The 45th Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, under the 79th Guards Bomber Aviation Corps and later the 50th Air Army, conducted Tupolev Tu-16A sorties to the arctic starting in the mid-1950s. During the mid-1960s, the base was one of the operating locations for the Tupolev Tu-22, which performed anti-surface warfare roles in the Baltic Sea through the 1980s. In the 1980s, the facility also hosted an interceptor regiment flying Mikoyan MiG-25 aircraft.
The base currently hosts the 61st Fighter Air Base, which operates Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 and Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft. Between February and April 2022, the Russian Air Force deployed Sukhoi Su-35S aircraft from the 23rd Fighter Aviation Regiment to the base. These aircraft conducted sorties during the Russian invasion of Ukraine before withdrawing to Russia in April 2022.
