Description
Domna is a Russian Aerospace Forces airbase located 27 km southwest of Chita, Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia. It is a large, hardened facility with six areas of revetments. The air base has been in use since 1971. Historically, in 1937-1938, personnel based at Domna were retrained on SB high-speed bombers. In 1939, the 38th High-Speed Bomber Aviation Regiment, stationed at the airfield, participated in the Battle of Khalkhin Gol. With the outbreak of World War II in June 1941, the regiment, armed with 45 SB aircraft, was sent to the front. MiG-23 aircraft from Domna were deployed to Shindand, Afghanistan, in the late 1980s. The base was home to the 733rd Bomber Aviation Regiment, flying Sukhoi Su-24 aircraft from 1975 to 1987, which was disbanded in July 1987. The 120th Fighter Aviation Regiment, established in 1969, moved to Domna in July 1971, converted to Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 in 1978, and to Mikoyan MiG-29 in 1993. Other past units include the 125th Guards Independent Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment (125 Gv ORAP) flying Su-17M3R and Su-24MR, and the 114th Bomber Aviation Regiment (114 BAP) flying Sukhoi Su-24 aircraft, decommissioned around 1992. The base is currently home to the 120th Composite Aviation Regiment, operating Mikoyan MiG-29s and Sukhoi Su-25s. The units at Domna are part of the 11th Air and Air Defence Forces Army of the Eastern Military District. In September 2015, four Su-30SM fighter aircraft from Domna were deployed to Khmeimim Air Base, Syria.
