Description

Dübendorf Air Base is located northeast of Dübendorf and east of Zürich, Switzerland. Development of the site began in 1910, and the Swiss Air Force has utilized the facility since 1914. Between 1919 and 1948, the base functioned as a civil airport for carriers including Ad Astra Aero and Swissair. During World War II, the base served as an internment site for foreign aircraft, including United States Army Air Forces B-17 and B-24 bombers and a Luftwaffe Me 262. Swiss Air Force operations during this period utilized Bf 109E and Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 aircraft. Following the transfer of civil operations to Zurich Airport in 1948, the facility reverted to military use. During the Cold War, the base hosted Aérospatiale Alouette II and III helicopters, alongside de Havilland Vampire, de Havilland Venom, Hawker Hunter, Dassault Mirage III, and Northrop F-5 Tiger II jets. Fighter aircraft operations concluded in 2005 when Fliegerstaffel 11 transitioned to Meiringen Air Base, and the retractable arresting gear was subsequently removed.

The base currently hosts Lufttransport Staffel 3 and Lufttransport Staffel 4, which operate Eurocopter EC635, AS332 Super Puma, and AS532 Cougar helicopters, as well as De Havilland Canada Twin Otter, Beechcraft 1900, and Beechcraft Super King Air aircraft. It is the home base for the PC-7 Team and the Super Puma/Cougar Display Team. Dübendorf houses the Swiss Air Force Command (AOC), the Air Defense & Direction Center, and the Berufsfliegerkorps. Air traffic control is managed by Skyguide National for military operations and Skyguide for civil sectors. Other resident organizations include the Police Helicopter Unit, JuAir, and Rega air rescue.

The facility provides parking for private and government aircraft during the World Economic Forum. It frequently hosts Swiss military aircraft such as the Pilatus PC-6, PC-9, and PC-12, alongside Dassault Falcon 900 and Cessna Citation Excel transports. The base is utilized by international partners for joint missions, involving aircraft such as Austrian C-130s and German CH-53s. The site also includes the Flieger-Flab-Museum and provides storage for the Solar Impulse 1 aircraft.
