Description

Evenes Air Station is a Royal Norwegian Air Force facility located north of the village of Evenes in Nordland, Norway. Established in 1979 as a detachment of Bodø Main Air Station, it became an independent entity in 1988. Following a period of reduced operations that began in 1993, the Norwegian parliament designated the site as a forward air base for Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) in 2012. The 133 Luftving was reestablished at the station on 1 January 2020.

The station hosts the Royal Norwegian Air Force fleet of Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, which assumed operational responsibilities from the P-3C Orion in July 2023. These aircraft perform surveillance in the Barents Sea and the northern Norwegian Sea. The base also operates F-35 fighter aircraft for QRA missions and has hosted U.S. Marine Corps F-35B and U.S. Navy P-8A aircraft. Units stationed at the facility include the 133 Luftving, 333 Squadron, and an air defense battalion.

Infrastructure at Evenes includes 36 third-generation hardened shelters, a portion of which are configured for F-35 operations. The station is configured to support a QRA of 15 fighter aircraft. Facilities include a P-8 hangar, administrative buildings, personnel quarters, and a hospital. The airfield is equipped with runway arresting gear for fighter aircraft. Integrated air defense is maintained through an air defense battalion utilizing the NASAMS III system and a counter-unmanned aerial system (CUAS).
