Description

Felipe Ángeles International Airport is located in Zumpango, State of Mexico, 35 kilometres north of Mexico City. The facility originated as Santa Lucía Air Force Base, established in 1952 to relocate the Balbuena Military Air Field. The aerodrome was inaugurated on 24 November 1952, and the transition of aircraft from Balbuena was completed in 1959. Between 1961 and 1964, the base was named "General Alfredo Lezama Álvarez." In October 2019, construction began to expand the military installation into a dual-use international airport, which opened for civilian operations on 21 March 2022.

The Mexican government owns the airport, with the Department of National Defense (SEDENA) responsible for its operation. It serves as a hub for the state-owned airline Mexicana de Aviación and functions as a primary air cargo center for several international carriers. Air Force Base No. 1 (B.A.M. No. 1) is situated in the eastern section of the grounds. This military component serves as a center for reconnaissance, transport, and combat wings, and houses the 37th Military Zone General Command.

Infrastructure at the 1,531-hectare site includes three runways, with runway 04R/22L designated for exclusive military use. B.A.M. No. 1 facilities include a military aviation apron, control tower, a military hospital, the Military Police Training Center, and the Military School of Specialist Troops (EMTEFAM). The airport also maintains a housing complex for Mexican Army personnel. Civilian infrastructure consists of a passenger terminal with 34 gates and a cargo complex with specialized warehouses and hydraulic concrete aprons.

Operational units at B.A.M. No. 1 include multiple air squadrons. The 401 Air Squadron operates F-5E/F supersonic aircraft for attack and air defense missions. Transport requirements are met by the 301 Air Squadron with C-295s, the 302 Air Squadron with C-130 and C-27J aircraft, and the 502 Air Squadron with Boeing 737s. Rotary-wing units include the 101 Air Squadron (EC725 Cougar), 112 Air Squadron (MD-530F), 104 Air Squadron (Bell 412), and 303 Air Squadron (Mi-17). Specialized operations are conducted by an Air Surveillance Squadron using Embraer 145s and a Phototechnical Air Squadron with C-90 aircraft.
