Description
Kanpur Airport is a dual-use domestic airport and an Indian Air Force base located at Chakeri, about 17 km from the city centre of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The airport operates from a new civil terminal, inaugurated on May 26, 2023, with flights commencing on June 7, 2023. This new terminal was constructed due to the limited expansion options and restrictions at the previous terminal, which was impacted by a strong military presence. The airport hosts the Indian Air Force's 1 Base Repair Depot and 4 Base Repair Depot under the Maintenance Command. The 1 BRD is responsible for overhauling the Antonov An-32 transport aircraft fleet, while the 4 BRD overhauls R-29 engines used in MiG-23 and MiG-27 aircraft, and M53 P2 engines of Mirage 2000 aircraft. Additionally, the airport is home to the Transport Aircraft Division (TAD) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which previously manufactured HS 748 Avro aircraft and currently produces Dornier 228 aircraft for both the Indian Armed Forces and the commercial market. There is a proposal to rename the airport to Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Airport.
