Description
Laguna del Sauce Naval Air Base, officially known as Capitán de Corbeta Carlos A. Curbelo International Airport, is a joint civil-military facility located 14 kilometers northwest of Maldonado, Uruguay. The installation is named after a Uruguayan naval aviator. The naval aviation presence succeeded operations at Isla de Ratas, a naval seaplane base in Montevideo Bay active from 1933 to 1950. The current civil terminal building was inaugurated in 1997.
The military component is operated by the Uruguayan Naval Aviation. The National Navy of Uruguay maintains its only naval aviation base at this location. Civil operations are managed by Consorcio Aeropuertos Internacionales S.A.
The infrastructure accommodates military aircraft alongside civil traffic, with capabilities to handle wide-body aircraft, mid-size jets such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, and turboprops like the ATR 42.
