Description
Migalovo is a military air base located 10 km west of Tver, Tver Oblast, Russia. It is a large military airlift base operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces under the Ministry of Defence. The base currently houses Russia's remaining Antonov An-22 fleet, and serves as an Ilyushin Il-76 base, with some Antonov An-12 aircraft stored. The Second Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation (2 TSNII) and the 8th Military Transport Aviation Regiment, part of the 12th Mginska Red Banner Military Transport Aircraft Division, are stationed here.
Historically, from 1946 to February 1975, the 56th Long-Range Fighter Aviation Division (later 56th Heavy Bomber Aviation Breslavl Division) was based at Migalovo. Its regiments included the 45th Heavy Bomber Regiment (flying Douglas A-20 Havoc, Tupolev Tu-2, Ilyushin Il-28, and Tupolev Tu-16), the 173rd Heavy Bomber Regiment (flying Douglas A-20 Havoc, Tu-2, IL-28, and Tu-16), and the 244th Bomber Aviation Regiment "Allenstein" (flying Boston B-3, Tupolev Tu-2, Ilyushin Il-28, and Tu-16). The 244th Regiment notably trained Egyptian Air Force personnel and flew combat missions over Yemen in 1962-63 before relocating in 1965.
In May 1991, the 730th Aviation Regiment of Fighter-Bombers, flying Sukhoi Su-17M4, was withdrawn to Migalovo from Neuruppin, Brandenburg, and subsequently disbanded in June 1991. Other historical units based at Migalovo include the 12th Military Transport Aviation Division headquarters (from 1946), the 8th Military Transport Aviation Regiment (flying An-12 and An-22), the 196th Military Transport Aviation Regiment (flying Il-76), the 224th Transport Aviation Detachment (flying Il-76 and An-124), and the 274th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment (flying Su-17C) from 1974 until its disbandment in 1993.
On May 25, 2025, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck the air base, with local reports of fire and smoke, although the local governor stated all drones were intercepted and no damage occurred.
