Description
MOD St Athan, formerly Royal Air Force St Athan, is a Ministry of Defence unit located near St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. Established in 1938, it served as a major RAF No. 4 School of Technical Training and an aircraft maintenance unit throughout its operational life, housing over 14,000 personnel during World War II for ground and air crew training. It also hosted various units including No. 19 and No. 32 Maintenance Units, and was a significant maintenance base for aircraft such as Vulcan, Victor, Buccaneer, Phantom, Harrier, Tornado, Jaguar, Hawk, and VC10 aircraft, including highly specialized servicing for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Avro Lancaster bomber. The site also housed British Army units, including the 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards.
In 2006, the station was renamed MOD St Athan. While the airfield portion was transferred to civilian control on 1 April 2019, becoming Bro Tathan airfield and owned by the Welsh Government, MOD St Athan continues to operate as a military base, comprising the barracks area adjacent to the airfield. The Universities of Wales Air Squadron, flying Grob Tutors, is the primary flying unit operating from the site. Other units currently based at MOD St Athan include the Special Forces Support Group and The Band of The Prince of Wales's Division. The base has also been utilized as an aircraft scrapping facility by eCube and for military aircraft MRO by Horizon Aircraft Services. Plans to relocate No. 4 School of Technical Training have been discussed but a definitive date and location are yet to be finalized.
