Description
Montgomery Air National Guard Base, also known as Dannelly Field, is an operational Air National Guard base located near Montgomery, Alabama, United States. The base is owned by the City of Montgomery and operated by the US Air Force, under the control of the Alabama Air National Guard. Its airfield is shared with Montgomery Regional Airport, indicating dual civilian and military use. The base was built in 1943. The primary unit stationed at the base is the 187th Fighter Wing.
The history of the 187th Fighter Wing dates back to 1952 with the organization of the 160th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. This squadron moved to Dannelly Field in January 1953. Over the years, the unit transitioned through various aircraft, including the RF-51 Mustang, RF-80 Shooting Star, and RF-84 Thunderflash. It was mobilized during the Berlin Crisis in 1961-1962, deploying to Toul-Rosieres Air Base, France. In August 1962, it was officially designated the 187th Reconnaissance Group. The unit operated the RF-4C Phantom II from 1971 to 1988, before converting to the F-4D in 1982 for a multi-purpose fighter role. In October 1988, the Group converted to the F-16 aircraft. In October 1995, it was designated the 187th Fighter Wing.
Currently, the 187th Fighter Wing serves as the host wing, comprising units such as the 187th Operations Group, which includes the 100th Fighter Squadron, the 187th Maintenance Group, 187th Medical Group, and 187th Mission Support Group. The base also hosts the 377th Fighter Squadron, a Geographically Separate Unit of the 495th Fighter Group, 20th Fighter Wing. The base began receiving F-35A Lightning II aircraft in 2023, with both the 100th Fighter Squadron and 377th Fighter Squadron operating this airframe. The base has two asphalt runways: 10/28, measuring 2,749.2 meters, and 3/21, measuring 1,222.5 meters.
