Description
Montgomery Air National Guard Base, also known as Dannelly Field, is located near Montgomery, Alabama. Established in 1943 as Gunter Army Airfield Auxiliary #6, the site is owned by the City of Montgomery and operated by the United States Air Force under the control of the Alabama Air National Guard. The 187th Fighter Wing’s presence at the installation began on January 1, 1953, when the 160th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron relocated to the field from Birmingham.
The base transitioned to jet operations in 1955 with the arrival of the RF-80 Shooting Star. The 160th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron subsequently operated the RF-84 Thunderflash from 1956 until 1971, including a mobilization and deployment to Toul-Rosieres Air Base, France, during the 1961–1962 Berlin Crisis. Following its reorganization as the 187th Reconnaissance Group in 1962, the unit operated the RF-4C Phantom II from 1971 to 1982. The mission shifted to a tactical fighter role in 1982 with the acquisition of the F-4D, followed by the F-16 in 1988. The organization was designated the 187th Fighter Wing in 1995.
The 187th Fighter Wing serves as the host unit for the installation. Flying operations are conducted by the 100th Fighter Squadron, which operates the F-35A Lightning II. The base also hosts the 377th Fighter Squadron, a geographically separate unit of the 495th Fighter Group, Ninth Air Force. Stationed organizations include the 187th Operations Group, 187th Maintenance Group, 187th Medical Group, and 187th Mission Support Group. Infrastructure includes Alabama Air National Guard hangar facilities and support buildings. The airfield is a shared-use facility, co-located with the Montgomery Regional Airport.
