Description

Orenburg air base, also known as Orenburg-2 or Orenburg Southwest, is a Military Transport Aviation base located 9 km southwest of Orenburg, Russia. The base features a large tarmac and revetments designed for 35 large transport aircraft. It is operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces, specifically Military Transport Aviation. The primary air unit stationed at the base is the 117th Military Transport Aviation Regiment, which is part of the 18th Guards Military Transport Aviation Division and operates Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. Additionally, the 102nd Separate Mixed Aviation Squadron, belonging to the 31st Missile Army of the Strategic Rocket Forces, is based here, equipped with Antonov An-26 aircraft and Mil Mi-8 helicopters.

Historically, the 128th Guards Military Transport Air Regiment, flying Ilyushin Il-76M aircraft, was based at Orenburg from 1992 until its disbandment in 1998. The 336th Aircraft Repair Plant of the Ministry of Defense, which repaired An-26 and previously Il-28 aircraft, operated at the airfield until 1996. The 117th Berlin Order of Kutuzov III degree Independent Aviation Regiment for Electronic Warfare, flying Antonov An-12 PPS aircraft, arrived in 1994 and was later redesignated as a Military Transport Aviation Regiment, transitioning to Ilyushin Il-76s. This regiment was part of the 12th Military Transport Aviation Division and was temporarily redesignated as the 6956th Aviation Base between 2009-2010 before reverting to its original designation in 2014. The base also previously hosted units of the now disbanded Orenburg Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots.
