Description
Severomorsk-3, also known as Malyavr or Murmansk Northeast, is an air base operated by the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. It is situated 28 kilometers east of Murmansk, adjacent to Lake Malyavr on the western Kola Peninsula. The base was constructed in 1950 and has been continuously in use since then. It features a concrete runway measuring 2,500 meters (8,202 ft).
Historically, Severomorsk-3 served as an operating location for Tupolev Tu-16 Badger medium bombers from the late 1950s. The 987th Maritime Missile Aviation Regiment operated the Tu-16 from this base between 1952 and 1993. During the 1970s, the airfield was designated as a Yakovlev Yak-38 Forger base, supporting its VTOL requirements with extensive Marston Mat planking. After the dissolution of the USSR, the 279th Independent Naval Shturmovik Aviation Regiment (279 OMShAP) became a primary operator, joining the base in October 1976. This unit operated Sukhoi Su-25 aircraft, including Su-25UB and Su-25UTG trainers, along with Yakovlev Yak-38 and Yak-38U aircraft. The 279th unit later transitioned to the 279th Independent Shipborne Fighter Aviation Regiment (279 OKIAP) of Russian Naval Aviation, comprising fighter and training squadrons equipped with Sukhoi Su-33, Sukhoi Su-27UB, and Su-25UTG aircraft.
Currently, Severomorsk-3 is home to the 100th Independent Shipborne Fighter Aviation Regiment, operating Mikoyan MiG-29KR/KUBR aircraft, and the 279th Independent Shipborne Fighter Aviation Regiment, which operates Kamov Ka-52K "Katran", Sukhoi Su-25UTG, and Sukhoi Su-33 aircraft. The Russian Navy's ZEVS-ELF Transmitter is located directly south of the air base.
