Sharq El Owainat Airport (Shark El Oweinat Airport)

Sharq El Owainat Airport (IATA: GSQ, ICAO: HEOW) is located at Sharq El Owainat in the Western Desert of Egypt and serves the New Valley Governorate. It is a public airport operated by the Egyptian government under a Build-Operate-Transfer arrangement.

The airport was built in three months in 2003 at a cost of US$3 million. Its purpose was to allow investors in the region's agricultural projects to bring in equipment and export crops. In August 2009, EgyptAir signed an agreement with the UAE-based Janan Investment Company to run a weekly Sunday service from Cairo International Airport. The flight carried workers and investors associated with agricultural development in the area. The airport handled 6,559 passengers in 2011, down 0.8% from 2010. No airlines currently operate scheduled services.

Military facilities were built at the airport between 2018 and 2024. In February 2026, The New York Times reported that this construction included a second runway and 17 aircraft hangars. Satellite imagery showed Egyptian and Turkish military aircraft using the airfield. The imagery also indicated that the site was a base for Turkish-built unmanned aerial vehicles.

The airport site covers 36 square kilometres. Its apron can accommodate eight aircraft. A basic terminal building processes around 100 passengers per hour and has no automated baggage conveyor. The airport lies within a free trade zone and has storage and packaging facilities for export goods. Two non-directional beacons provide navigation support. The Shark El Oweinat NDB (OWT) is just east of the field, and the Oweinat NDB (ENT) is 9 nautical miles (17 km) west of the runway.
