Description
Sion Air Base is located 2.5 km southwest of Sion, Switzerland, in the Rhone Valley. The facility opened in 1935.
The Swiss Air Force operates the installation as one of its four jetfighter bases, designated as Flugplatzkommando 14. It is the home base for the militia pilot unit Fliegerstaffel 19, which operates F-5E aircraft. The base hosts various aircraft types, including F/A-18 and F-5 fighter jets, Pilatus PC-6, PC-7, PC-9, and PC-21 propeller-driven aircraft, and helicopters.
Operational infrastructure includes retractable arresting gear devices at both ends of the runway for use by F/A-18 and F-5 aircraft. Following a reorganization of the Swiss Air Force, the facility was designated to function as an alternate airfield for military operations while supporting civilian aviation.
