Description
Taoyuan Air Base is located in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, southeast of Taoyuan International Airport. Originally a Republic of China Air Force facility, the site was transferred to the Republic of China Navy in 2007 and renamed Taoyuan Naval Base.
The installation hosted several United States Air Force units during the 1950s. The 44th Fighter-Bomber Squadron operated F-86 Sabres from the base in 1955, and the 6021st Reconnaissance Squadron deployed RB-57A and RB-57D aircraft for reconnaissance missions beginning in 1957. During the 1958 Quemoy Crisis, the 83rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron and the 337th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron operated F-104A Starfighters from the base as part of Operation Jonah Able. From 1961 to 1974, the facility hosted the Black Cat Squadron, which operated U-2 surveillance aircraft. The Republic of China Air Force 5th/401st Tactical Combined Wing also operated F-104 and F-5 aircraft at the site.
The base currently houses a collection of aircraft transferred from the Chung Cheng Aviation Museum in 2014.
