Description

Tenerife North, formerly known as Los Rodeos, is located on a plateau in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife. The facility was established in 1929 following a request from Lufthansa to connect the island with Berlin via Seville. The first flight, an Arado VI from Seville, occurred in 1929. The site was designated a national airport in 1930, and the terminal building was completed in 1943. Official opening to international and domestic traffic followed in 1946. On March 27, 1977, the airfield was the location of a collision between two Boeing 747 aircraft.

Enaire and Aena operate the airfield, which supports inter-island, national, and international traffic. Historical operations include use by the Spanish Air Force (Ejército del Aire), specifically with Douglas DC-3 aircraft. Current aircraft hosted at the facility include the Boeing 737, Boeing 787, Airbus A320, Airbus A330, ATR 72-600, and Embraer E195-E2. Inter-island connections account for 50% of flight operations, while national routes primarily serve Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville. International services include routes to Caracas, Rome, and Marrakech.

Infrastructure includes a terminal building inaugurated in 2003 and a specialized module for inter-island operations opened in 2005. Recent developments include an expansion of the eastern platform authorized in 2007. This project involved 22,582 square meters of land to create a 24,000-square-meter parking area for three Boeing 767-type aircraft. The expansion also included 11,400 square meters for ground assistance services and new service roads for fuel zone access.
