Description
Vozdvizhenka, also known as Ussuriysk and formerly Voroshilov, is an air base located in Primorsky Krai, Russia, near the village of Vozdvizhenka. It was built in 1933 and has been in use since April 1933. The air base was historically dedicated to the Pacific heavy long-range bomber fleet and was owned by the Ministry of Defence, operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces.
From the 1960s, Vozdvizhenka housed the 444th Berlin Order of Kutuzov 3rd degree and Alexander Nevsky Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment, which was part of the 326th Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, 37th Air Army. A declassified CIA document from 1969 indicated it was the only base east of the Urals with Tupolev Tu-22 Blinder aircraft. Later, from the 1970s onwards, the regiment operated supersonic long-range Tu-22M3 bombers. The 444th Regiment also operated Tupolev Tu-4s from 1951 to 1957 and Tupolev Tu-16 variants until 1991-92, with Tu-16K in service from 1975. As of 1991, the 444th TBAP was part of the 55th Heavy Bomber Air Division, 30th Air Army.
Another unit stationed at the air base was the 523rd Red Orshansky Orders of Suvorov and Kutuzov and Alexander Nevsky Aviation Regiment Fighter-Bombers (APIB), 303rd Aviation Division, equipped with Sukhoi Su-17s. This regiment was disbanded in September–October 1994.
In 2009, as part of a reorganization of the Air Force, the 444th Regiment was disbanded. Some aircraft were transferred to Belaya air base, while others were dismantled. Although the bomber base operations ceased, the airfield continues to host the aviation commandant of Khurba airbase and the 322 Aircraft Repair Factory (322 ARZ). Approximately 9 kilometers north of the base is a repair and technical base (RTB) for nuclear weapons maintenance, storage, and assembly. This unit, Military Unit 23477, is part of the 12th Chief Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Russia and remains active.
