Description
Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam (JBPHH) is a United States military installation located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The base was established in 2010 through the amalgamation of Naval Station Pearl Harbor and Hickam Air Force Base, following the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The naval component dates to 1899, while the air component was built in 1938 and named for aviation pioneer Lt. Col. Horace Meek Hickam.
The installation is operated by the United States Navy under the jurisdiction of Navy Region Hawaii. It serves as a joint installation providing base operating support for various service branches. Primary tenant commands include the United States Indo-Pacific Command, United States Pacific Fleet, and Pacific Air Forces, the latter of which is headquartered on the base. The 647th Air Base Group and Navy Region Hawaii serve as the host units.
The naval infrastructure provides berthing, shore side support, maintenance, and training for surface ships and submarines. It houses the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, which includes dry dock services and serves as the sole intermediate maintenance location for submarines in the Middle Pacific. Stationed naval units include Submarine Squadron One, Submarine Squadron Seven, and Destroyer Squadron 31. These units operate fleets of nuclear-powered attack submarines, guided-missile destroyers, and cruisers.
The air component serves as a site for strategic air mobility, operational missions, and special air missions. The 15th Wing and the Hawaii Air National Guard’s 154th Wing are the primary aviation units stationed at the facility. These wings operate squadrons of F-22A Raptor fighters, C-17A Globemaster III transports, KC-135R Stratotanker aerial refuelers, and C-37B Gulfstream aircraft. The base also hosts the 613th Air Operations Center and the 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing.
Additional facilities and units include the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Pacific and the United States Space Forces Indo-Pacific. The base supports United States Army operations through the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command and the 8th Theater Sustainment Command, which maintains a fleet of Logistic Support Vessels. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency also maintains a major operations and accounting center on the installation. Ground-based infrastructure includes a self-contained water system supplied by groundwater wells serving the military population and regional facilities.
