Description
The M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle (ESR), originally designated as the XM2010 and the M24 Reconfigured Sniper Weapon System, was developed by PEO Soldier for the United States Army. Designed in 2010, the weapon was derived from the M24 Sniper Weapon System to provide infantry snipers with greater effective range during combat operations in Afghanistan. Following a competitive bidding process, Remington Arms secured the production contract to rebuild existing M24 platforms. Manufacturing occurred between 2010 and 2014, resulting in the production of 2,558 units.
The firearm is a bolt-action rifle built on the long-action version of the Remington 700 receiver, which accommodates dimensionally larger cartridges. It features a hammer-forged, free-floating barrel utilizing Obermeyer 5-R rifling. The receiver is integrated into a chassis system designed to maximize physical adjustments for the operator. This chassis features a right-folding buttstock to facilitate transport, routing channels for accessory cables, and removable Picatinny rails. The rifle utilizes a detachable box magazine and is equipped with a quick-detachable sound suppressor and muzzle brake to mitigate recoil, muzzle flash, and signature. Optics consist of a Leupold variable power telescopic sight featuring a first focal plane grid reticle and bullet drop compensation, which can be paired with clip-on night sights. All components feature corrosion-resistant coatings.
The United States Army began deploying the rifle to its sniper school and combat units in Afghanistan in 2011. Following operational feedback, the Army decided to replace its inventory of older M24 rifles with the M2010. The platform achieved Type Classification-Standard and Full Materiel Release in 2013, with the final contract deliveries completed in 2014. The weapon is used by the United States Army and Colombian Special Forces. In 2014, the military tested a small quantity of these rifles equipped with computerized TrackingPoint smart scopes. In 2015, Remington Defense released the rifle to the civilian market. The United States Army initiated plans to phase out the system in favor of the Barrett Mk22 Multi-Role Adaptive Design starting in 2021.
