Barrett MRAD Mk 22

The Barrett MRAD (Multi-role Adaptive Design) is a bolt-action sniper rifle designed by Chris Barrett and manufactured by the Barrett Firearms Company in the United States. Development of the platform began to meet the requirements of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Precision Sniper Rifle solicitation announced in December 2009. The design is based on the Barrett 98B receiver structure, incorporating modifications and adjustments to satisfy military requirements. The rifle was named the 2012 Rifle of the Year by Shooting Illustrated magazine.

The firearm operates via a bolt-action mechanism and features a folding stock that latches to the bolt handle. A central design feature is the field-changeable barrel and caliber system. Loosening two Torx screws in the receiver allows the user to remove the barrel from the front of the handguard. Caliber changes are completed by swapping the bolt face and, depending on the cartridge, the magazine. The trigger module can be removed without tools, allowing access to adjust pull weight and over-travel. Ergonomic components include a single-button length-of-pull adjustment, an adjustable cheek rest, a reversible safety lever, an ambidextrous magazine release, and compatibility with standard pistol grips. A polymer bolt guide acts as a dust cover to prevent debris from entering the action. For maintenance, the upper and lower receivers separate via a rear latch assembly while the front detent pin acts as a hinge. The upper receiver features a sloped Picatinny rail, with provisions for mounting shorter rail sections along the handguard.

The rifle was initially submitted for the USSOCOM Precision Sniper Rifle trial. While another system was selected in 2013, the program was re-competed, leading to the adoption of the Mk 22 Mod 0 Advanced Sniper Rifle (ASR) variant by USSOCOM in 2019. This variant is equipped with a suppressor and Nightforce day optics. In 2021, the US Army awarded a contract for the Mk 22 Precision Sniper Rifle (PSR) variant, utilizing Leupold optics, to replace existing sniper platforms. The US Marine Corps also adopted the Mk 22 PSR to replace legacy sniper systems, reaching full operational capability in November 2024. Internationally, the Israel Defense Forces and the Yamam counter-terrorism unit adopted the platform. Other military and law enforcement operators include the armed forces of Norway, New Zealand, Greece, El Salvador, Indonesia, South Korea, and Ukraine, alongside use by the non-state Arakan Army.
