Description

The Fateh-110 was developed to fulfill a need for an accurate, short-range guided missile following the Iran-Iraq War, as existing unguided rockets were deemed too imprecise. Development began in the mid-1990s, using the Zelzal-2 artillery rocket as a foundation. Syria reportedly participated in the development program, which led to a successful first test in 2002, with the system entering production and service shortly thereafter. Successive generations of the missile have since been introduced, reflecting an ongoing effort to improve upon the initial design.

A family of single-stage, solid-propellant tactical ballistic missiles, the Fateh-110 is designed to strike surface targets. It can be armed with a substantial high-explosive warhead, and some variants are capable of deploying submunitions. To ensure accuracy, the missile employs a guidance system that combines inertial navigation with terminal guidance, likely using electro-optical or infrared imaging sensors. The suspected integration of commercial satellite navigation systems further enhances its precision. The system's capabilities have evolved through multiple generations, with later variants demonstrating improved range and accuracy, enabling them to engage targets several hundred kilometers away. Specialized variants have also been developed, including anti-ship and anti-radiation versions.

The Fateh-110 is a road-mobile system transported and launched from several different wheeled transporter-erector-launchers (TELs), some of which can carry multiple missiles. Its primary operators are Iran and Syria, which also produces a license-built version known as the M-600. The missile system has seen extensive combat use, notably by Iranian and Syrian forces during the Syrian Civil War. Iran has also deployed the Fateh-110 in missile strikes against targets in Iraq. The system has proliferated to non-state actors, with Hezbollah confirmed to have inducted it into its arsenal, and an agreement has been made for its transfer to Russia. The missile’s presence and use in regional conflicts have made it a system of significant geopolitical interest.
