Missile JL-2 (CH-SS-N-14)

The JL-2 (Chinese: 巨浪-2, "Giant Wave 2"; NATO reporting name CSS-N-14) is a Chinese second-generation submarine-launched ballistic missile of intercontinental range, carried by the People's Liberation Army Navy's Type 094 submarines. It was the first Chinese SLBM to provide a viable sea-based nuclear delivery system.

Development began in the mid-1980s as part of a programme to replace the liquid-fuelled ballistic missiles designed from 1965 onwards with solid-fuelled types. The JL-2 was derived from the land-based DF-31, with the naval variant assigned lower priority than its land counterpart. The first at-sea launch took place in 2001 from a Type 031 submarine. The programme experienced repeated test failures before a successful test cycle was completed in 2012. During development, reports indicated that China examined fitting the missile with an anti-satellite warhead to provide a sea-based anti-satellite option.

The JL-2 is a three-stage, solid-fuelled missile. The baseline payload is a single warhead with a yield of one megaton. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the missile may alternatively carry three to eight multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles with yields of 20, 90, or 150 kilotons.

The missile is operated solely by the People's Liberation Army Navy. Each Type 094 submarine can carry twelve missiles. Deterrence patrols with the JL-2 embarked began in December 2015. The missile has not been used in combat.
