Description

The JL-2 (NATO reporting name CSS-N-14) is a Chinese second-generation intercontinental-range submarine-launched ballistic missile deployed by the People's Liberation Army Navy.

Development began in the mid-1980s as the submarine-launched variant of the land-based DF-31, forming part of a effort to replace liquid-fueled missiles with solid-fueled designs. The first at-sea launch occurred in 2001 from a Type 031 submarine. Following a series of test failures, a successful test cycle was achieved in 2012. During development, modification of the missile to accommodate an anti-satellite warhead was evaluated.

The JL-2 is a three-stage, solid-fueled missile. Payload options consist of a single one-megaton warhead or three to eight multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles with selectable yields of 20, 90, or 150 kilotons.

The missile is operated by China on Type 094 submarines, which are configured to carry 12 missiles per vessel. Operational deterrence patrols with the JL-2 commenced in December 2015, providing a sea-based nuclear deterrent.
