Description

Development of the S-350 Vityaz began in 2007, following preliminary studies initiated in 1999. The system was designed to replace the S-300PS and leveraged technical experience gained from a joint medium-range surface-to-air missile project with South Korea. Publicly unveiled in 2013, the system completed state tests in 2019 and officially entered service in 2020.

The S-350 is a mobile surface-to-air missile system comprised of multifunctional passive electronically scanned array radar stations, a command post, and transporter erector launchers. The radar provides 360-degree coverage for target detection, illumination, and missile guidance. Each launcher carries 12 missiles. The system utilizes the 9M96 missile family, which employs aerodynamic control surfaces and thrust vectoring for terminal maneuvers. These missiles use active or passive homing guidance. The system also integrates the 9M100 missile, which utilizes infrared passive homing for engagements. The architecture allows for the simultaneous engagement of up to 16 aerodynamic or 12 ballistic targets. Ground-based components are mounted on wheeled heavy high-mobility chassis. A naval version, designated Redut, is integrated into several classes of frigates and corvettes.

Russia and Algeria operate the system. The S-350 was reportedly deployed to Syria in 2017.
