Description
INS Sardar Patel is an Indian Navy base at Porbandar on the Gujarat coast and the station headquarters of Naval Station, Porbandar. It falls under the Western Naval Command and provides logistic support to naval units operating in the northern Arabian Sea, including those deployed along the International Maritime Boundary Line with Pakistan. It is the second Indian Navy base in Gujarat after INS Dwarka near Okha.
The base supports the operations of ships, submarines and aircraft of the Western Naval Command, working with the co-located Naval Air Enclave at Porbandar. Its area of responsibility covers the Gujarat coastline, some 880 nautical miles in length, and the approaches to the state's commercial ports, which handle roughly 30 per cent of Indian port cargo, and to the twelve single point moorings in the Gulf of Kutch through which the greater part of India's crude oil imports is landed. The establishment functions as the base for the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Gujarat) and coordinates with other maritime agencies on coastal and offshore security, a task assigned to the Indian Navy as lead agency after the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai.
The base was commissioned on 9 May 2015 by Anandiben Patel, then Chief Minister of Gujarat, with the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R. K. Dhowan, and the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Vice Admiral S. P. S. Cheema, in attendance. The destroyers INS Delhi and INS Kolkata were present at the ceremony. Commodore B. R. Prakash, VSM, Naval Officer-in-Charge (Gujarat), was the first commanding officer. The establishment is named for Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India.
