Description

INS Vajrabahu is an Indian Navy submarine base under the Western Naval Command, located at Mumbai, Maharashtra, on India's west coast.

The base is the seat of the Commodore Commanding Submarines (West), COMCOS (W), who also serves as its commanding officer. It provides material and logistic support to the conventional submarines homeported at Mumbai, namely the Sindhughosh-class (Kilo) and Shishumar-class (Type 209/1500) boats. Two submarine squadrons are associated with the base: the 12th Submarine Squadron, formed in March 1990 with Sindhughosh-class boats, and the 10th Submarine Squadron, formed in February 1992 with Shishumar-class boats. The base operates and maintains a large portion of the Indian Navy's submarine arm.

Shore facilities include the submarine base complex, known as the A-14 building, together with a Submarine Motion Control Simulator, an attack simulator and a water tower building added after commissioning. The establishment also holds a non-dieted sick bay and is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of individual escape suits for submarine crews.

Submarine operations at Mumbai began from temporary facilities after the Indian Navy took delivery of the Vela-class boats from the Soviet Union in 1973, with the site hosting the office of Captain Submarines and the 9th Submarine Squadron, an appointment initially held ex officio by the commanding officer of the submarine depot ship INS Amba. The submarine base complex was commissioned as the A-14 building on 22 August 1987 by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R. H. Tahiliani, to support the submarine fleet of the Western Naval Command. The operations base was subsequently expanded with submarine support facilities and commissioned as INS Vajrabahu on 1 February 1996 by Admiral Vijai Singh Shekhawat.
