INS Venduruthy (HMIS Venduruthy)

INS Venduruthy is a naval station of the Indian Navy on Willingdon Island at Kochi, Kerala, on India's south-western coast. It houses the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command and is the Indian Navy's largest training establishment.

The station provides administrative and logistic support to the training establishments of the Southern Naval Command, and covers the logistic requirements of service and civilian personnel and naval units based at Kochi as well as at Ezhimala, Wellington, Bengaluru and the Lakshadweep Islands, together with the naval NCC units. Training functions are concentrated in a group of schools on the establishment: the Seamanship School, which trains executive officers and sailors of the Indian Navy and of foreign navies; the Diving School; the Navigation and Direction School; the Anti-Submarine Warfare School; the Signal School; the Centre for Leadership and Behavioural Studies; and NIETT. The base is commanded by Commodore V. Z. Job.

INS Garuda, a naval air station, lies within the perimeter of INS Venduruthy.

A small naval unit was established on the site two days before the outbreak of the Second World War, and the airstrip near the port passed to the Royal Air Force in 1941. The facilities were transferred to the Royal Navy on 23 June 1943 and expanded into the Royal Navy's headquarters in South India. The Royal Indian Navy took over the establishment in 1946, renaming it from HMS Chinkara to HMIS Venduruthy, and it became INS Venduruthy on 26 January 1950. After partition removed three training establishments from Indian control, Venduruthy was selected to replace them, giving the base its present training role.
